Anger is building among Southport residents this week as an apparent burst pipe on the town’s main shopping street continues to send several jets of water spraying several feet into the air, soaking unsuspecting passers-by.
“What do we even pay our council tax for?” asked angry local resident Maureen Rimmer this morning. “It’s been spraying water everywhere for weeks.”
Witnesses say the issue appears to worsen each day, with one shopper describing “water coming from all directions” near the Town Hall area. Others have expressed frustration at what they see as slow action from the authorities.
“I walked past yesterday and it was still happening,” said another resident, who asked not to be named. “If this was Bootle, they’d have sorted it by now.”
Environmental concerns have also been raised, with locals describing the sight of water cascading into the street as “heart-breaking” and claiming “thousands of litres of fresh water are being wasted every day.”
When contacted for comment, a spokesperson for Sefton Council said:
“We understand the concerns of the people of Southport and are working closely with United Utilities to have the leak repaired by the weekend.”
At the time of publication, the water was still flowing.
