Southport to Blackpool bridge facing fresh delays

bridgeFears over an increase in anti-social behaviour could lead to work on the new Southport to Blackpool bridge, which is set to start this year, being suspended until 2018, it has been confirmed.

A campaign led by Southport Conservative councilor Dick Withers is said to be behind the delay. His primary concern is the bridge making it easier for the groups of stag and hen party revelers that Blackpool is famous for to reach Southport.

“We have a lovely, peaceful town.” Withers insisted. “The last thing we need is drunken hordes of loud, fat women in matching pink cowboy hats, or loud, fat men in comedy wigs and high heels tottering over the bridge on a Friday or Saturday night.”

Meanwhile, local businesses have reacted with fury, highlighting the boost to the local economy, extra jobs and easier access to donkey rides that the bridge would provide.

We’d love to hear your views on whether the bridge should go ahead. You can comment below, or on our Facebook page.
